Independent and Private Adoptions

Independent adoptions, also known as private adoptions, are those that do not involve the assistance of a public or private child placement agency.

In an independent adoption, the biological parents of the child place the child directly with the adoptive parents. The adoptive parent(s) and the biological parent(s) may already know each other, such as a step parent adoption or a family adoption, or they may find each other through various resources such as advertisement in newspapers, internet, or word of mouth.

One of the benefits of an independent adoption, particularly in this economy, is that it can be one of the least costly avenues for adoption. Independent adoptions, if the birth parents agree, may also allow the adoptive parents to have much more involvement in the pregnancy and birth of the child, as compared to an agency adoption.
